Wednesday Wisdom – What Is My Sodom?

This morning, my Bible reading took me to Genesis 19, the story of God destroying Sodom and Gomorrah because of the rampant sin that had consumed those cities. In the midst of that destruction, God rescued Lot, his wife, and their daughters. He provided a way out before judgment came.

That part of the story reminded me of the way God rescues us from our sin. He has provided a way of escape for us, not because we deserve it, but because of His grace and mercy through the blood of Jesus.

But as I read the story, one part really stood out to me: Lot’s wife looked back.

God had clearly told them not to look back at the city. They were being rescued from it, yet she turned around and looked back longingly at what she had been told to leave behind. And in that moment, she became a pillar of salt.

That got me thinking: What is my Sodom?

What is the sin God is trying to rescue me from? What is the thing in my life that He is asking me to walk away from, yet part of me still wants to hold onto? What am I tempted to look back at instead of moving forward with God?

I think we all have a Sodom.

There are things in each of our lives that God is calling us to leave behind. Sin, habits, attitudes, relationships, desires, or ways of living that may have become comfortable or familiar, even though God is telling us they no longer belong in our lives.

And I am thankful that He doesn’t leave us to figure that out on our own. The Holy Spirit is our Helper and our guide. He lovingly convicts us, reveals the sin in our hearts, and points us toward repentance. Conviction isn’t condemnation. It is God’s grace showing us what needs to change and calling us toward something better.

The question is not whether I have a Sodom. The question is whether I am willing to leave it behind.

Am I willing to trust God enough to walk away? Am I willing to stop looking back at the things He has called me out of? Am I willing to believe that what God is leading me toward is better than what He is asking me to leave behind?

Lord, help me recognize my Sodom. Give me the courage to walk away from the sin You reveal in my life, and give me the strength not to look back. Thank You for the gift of Your Holy Spirit, who convicts, guides, helps, and continually points me back to You. Help me trust Your direction, surrender what You ask me to surrender, and keep moving forward in obedience.

May I leave my Sodom behind, keep my eyes on You, and never look back
